About This Project
Hokkaido's fishing communities have harvested the sea for generations, but declining fish stocks threaten both marine ecosystems and traditional livelihoods. Our initiative works directly with fishing families to transition to sustainable practices without sacrificing their income. We provide equipment upgrades, training in selective fishing techniques, and help fishers achieve MSC certification—opening access to premium sustainable seafood markets. This creates a virtuous cycle: sustainable fishing commands higher prices, incentivizing conservation. We're proving that protecting the ocean and supporting fishing communities aren't opposing goals—they're the same goal.
How It Works
One-on-one consulting with fishing boat operators
Equipment upgrades for selective catch methods
MSC certification preparation and support
Market access programs for certified catch
